Concussions are a functional injury, not a structural injury. This means that a concussion may not show on a MRI or CT scan. It is caused by changes in the chemicals in the brain and how the nerve cells talk to each other.
What do I do if I suspect I or my friend/family member has a concussion?
The good news is that 80-90% of Concussions improve on their own within the first 1-2 weeks. However, for the 10-20% that do not, specific post concussion Physical therapy can help!
Do I need a MRI?
MRIs and CT scans are not needed to diagnose or treat a concussion. These imaging techniques may be ordered by your provider to rule out other potential causes for your symptoms, especially if you were in a motor vehicle accident or if you are over the age of 65.
